Donald Trump triumphs over Kamala Harris; scripts historic comeback to White House

Washington, Nov 6: Staging a momentous political comeback, Donald Trump triumphed over his Democratic rival Kamala Harris in the US presidential election after trouncing her in key battleground states.

The 78-year-old Republican and former president told jubilant crowds in Florida: "America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate."

Trump secured at least 279 electoral votes after clinching wins in the swing states of Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wisconsin. Harris has won at least 219 votes. A successful candidate should win at least 270 electoral votes.

Of the seven crucial swing states, Trump won North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and was ahead in Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona when reports last came in.

US media outlets projected Trump’s victory after the key battleground state of Wisconsin put him over the top and he secured the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. His impressive win ended the Democrats’ desperate attempt to thwart his return to the White House.

Trump vowed at his Mar-a-Lago resort early Wednesday to “heal” the nation, to fix its borders and to deliver a strong and prosperous economy after millions of his voters turned to him amid frustration over high prices for food and housing and embraced his plans for a crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

Inflation and illegal immigration were the Republicans' two top issues during the election as polls consistently showed Americans' unhappiness with how President Joe Biden handled them.

Vice President Harris, 60, is yet to concede the race to Trump. Dejected crowds and party supporters left her watch party when it was clear that she wasn't going to be America's first woman president, the first woman of colour and the first South Asian (Indian-origin) politician to be elected to the powerful post.

In his victory speech from his Mar-a-Lago resort early Wednesday, Trump, known to be the most polarising figure in US politics, vowed to “heal” the nation, to fix its borders and to deliver a strong and prosperous economy after millions of harried Americans voted for him amid growing frustration over inflation and embraced his plans for a crackdown on undocumented immigrants who were taking away American jobs.

“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honour of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president,” said Trump, only the second president to win a nonconsecutive term. “This will truly be the golden age of America,” he told a raucous crowd at his campaign HQ in Florida.

Trump's historic victory represents a remarkable comeback for a man who left Washington amidst the unprecedented insurrection of January 6, 2021. After being denounced by Democrats and even some Republicans, Trump was nearly banished from Washington. But the wily politician has returned to the US Capitol after four years to the pinnacle of American power.

Trump's win will help cement his "Make America Great Again" brand of politics in America as the dominant strand of Republicanism for the foreseeable future. After assuming power on January 20, 2025, Trump must govern a nation deeply riven by social, racial, cultural and economic difficulties that he has exploited during the campaign trail. (Ends)
